Matthew Alpern is the Director of Quality Enhancement for Criminal Defense Trials at the New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services. He holds a B.A. from Emory University and a J.D. from George Washington University. Currently, he also serves on the faculty of the Monroe County Public Defender Office's Western New York Advanced Trial Skills Program and as a guest lecturer for the Oneida County Public Defender Office's Trial Academy and Assigned Counsel School.
Alpern’s career has focused on criminal defense representation, particularly in high-stakes cases such as homicides, sexual assaults, and capital offenses. He previously served as Deputy Chief of the Trial Division at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, a Deputy Capital Defender in New York State, and a trial attorney with the Albany County Office of the Alternate Public Defender. His expertise spans factual investigation, mitigation evidence development, and trial strategy in capital cases.
His professional contributions emphasize enhancing the quality of indigent legal services and training the next generation of defense attorneys through advanced trial skills programs. He has dedicated over three decades to advocating for equitable legal representation for underprivileged clients.
