Susan Stratton Sayre is an Associate Professor of Economics at Smith College and Co-Director of the Environmental Concentration program. Her work bridges economic theory with environmental policy, focusing on water and climate policy through numerical simulation and dynamic optimization techniques.
- Contact: ssayre@smith.edu
- Office: Pierce Hall 209, Smith College
- Office Hours (Spring 2025): Tuesdays 9–10 a.m., Wednesdays 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Sayre’s research explores critical environmental challenges, including:
- Climate change downside risks in California agriculture
- Groundwater management and well deepening economics in India
- Optimal payments for hydrological ecosystem services under improved information
- Negotiation dynamics in water policy under uncertainty
- Carbon pricing frameworks for higher education institutions
She actively contributes to interdisciplinary programs at Smith, including the Environmental Science & Policy major and the Climate Change Concentration, where she teaches courses on environmental economics, mathematical modeling, and science communication.
Selected Research Trends: Her publications highlight a focus on computational modeling for environmental policy, with recurring themes in water governance, climate risk mitigation, and the intersection of economic incentives with ecological sustainability. Methodologies include dynamic optimization, spatial microsimulation, and stakeholder negotiation frameworks.
