Susan Dobson is an Associate Professor in the Photography Department and Head of the MFA Program at the University of Guelph's School of Fine Art and Music. She holds an MFA from the University of Guelph (1997) and a Bachelor of Applied Arts from Ryerson University (1988). Her research explores contemporary photography’s intersection with urban landscapes, suburban culture, and architectural history. Dobson’s work has been exhibited globally, including major festivals like CONTACT (Toronto), Fotoseptiembre (Mexico), and Le Mois de la Photo (Montreal).
Her projects, such as Slide Library (2021) and Parallax (2023), investigate photography’s materiality and historical archives. She has been awarded the K.M. Hunter Emerging Artist Award (1998), two Gold National Magazine Awards, and a SSHRC Research Grant (2011). Her work is featured in prominent collections like the National Gallery of Canada and the Swiss Museum of Photography.
As Department Head, Dobson oversees academic and creative initiatives, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Her recent grants include SSHRC funding for research into photography’s temporal dynamics. She lectures widely, including at the University of Toronto and the National Arts Centre in Mexico City.
