Sarah Bassnett is a Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Western Ontario. She holds a Ph.D. from Binghamton University (SUNY), an M.A. from York University, and a B.A. (Honours) from York University.
- Expertise in the history of photography and photo-based contemporary art
- Focus on intersections of photography with social change, power, resistance, and migration
- Co-recipient of a SSHRC Partnership Development Grant for The Family Camera Network
Research Highlights
Her work explores how photography shapes narratives of migration, ethnic difference, and social reform. Recent projects include a SSHRC-funded study on Central American migration through photographic storytelling and co-authoring the first comprehensive history of photography in Canada (Photography in Canada, 1839-1989, 2023).
Publications & Awards
Winner of the J.J. Talman Award and Heritage Toronto Historical Writing Award for her book Picturing Toronto: Photography and the Making of a Modern City (2016). Her curated exhibitions at the Royal Ontario Museum and City of Toronto Archives further demonstrate her engagement with archival and contemporary visual discourse.
