Susan D. Boulware, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Endocrinology) and Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine. She serves as Medical Director of the Yale Gender Program, an interdisciplinary initiative providing gender-affirming care for children and adolescents. Her roles also include membership on the Dean's Advisory Council for LGBTQI Affairs. Dr. Boulware trained at the University of Texas Medical School (Residency, 1987) and Yale University School of Medicine (Fellowship).
Her research focuses on pediatric endocrine disorders, including growth abnormalities, puberty, and pituitary/thyroid/adrenal dysfunction. She has published extensively on gender-affirming care, metabolic effects of hormones, and clinical endocrinology. Key honors include the FLAGS Research Award (2017) and NIH grants.
Dr. Boulware collaborates with psychologists, gynecologists, ethicists, and legal experts to address complex medical and social needs of transgender youth. Her work emphasizes holistic care for patients facing transphobia and internalized stigma. Recent publications highlight combating medical misinformation in gender care and genetic aspects of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
