Susan D Shenkin is a Professor of Healthcare for Older People, Ageing and Health at the University of Edinburgh's Usher Institute within the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. She serves as an Honorary Consultant with NHS Lothian Ageing and Health. Her academic career spans interdisciplinary research focusing on healthcare for older people, particularly those living with geriatric syndromes including delirium, dementia, and frailty. She holds leadership roles including Co-Chair of ENRICH Scotland, Deputy Director of the Advanced Care Research Centre Academy, and medical advisor to the Lothian Birth Cohort Studies.
Professor Shenkin's research interests encompass care home research, data-driven innovation in health and social care, systematic reviews of observational studies, and the lifecourse epidemiology of cognitive ageing and cerebrovascular disease. She has developed significant expertise in using electronic health records for research and has led multiple projects focused on delirium and dementia assessment tools. Her highly cited systematic reviews on dementia and delirium have influenced clinical practice guidelines globally, including the widely adopted 4AT delirium assessment tool.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on integrating technology and data science with geriatric medicine, examining topics such as electronic health record applications, neuroimaging biomarkers, and innovative approaches to care home research. The work spans multiple methodologies from systematic reviews to cohort studies and interventional research, with particular emphasis on improving care for older adults in community and care home settings.
