Susan Cannon Harris is a Professor of English at the University of Notre Dame, affiliated with the Keough Naughton Institute for Irish Studies, Gender Studies, and Film, Television, and Theater. She holds concurrent faculty positions across multiple disciplines. Her academic journey includes a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin (1998), an M.A. from the University of North Carolina (1993), and a B.A. from Yale University (1991).
Her research focuses on 20th/21st Century Irish drama, performance studies, gender and queer theory, and postcolonial studies. Notable works include Irish Drama and the Other Revolutions (2017) and Gender and Modern Irish Drama (2002). She explores intersections between drama, political movements, and embodiment through feminist, queer, and decolonial lenses.
Teaching spans undergraduate and graduate levels, emphasizing modern literature, theater theory, and cultural studies. Awards include the Marian Mullin Hancock Award (2019) and the Kaneb Teaching Award (2005). She has directed over 20 doctoral dissertations and mentored numerous undergraduate theses.
Service roles include Director of Graduate Studies for the English Department, leadership in the Keough Institute, and contributions to professional organizations like the American Conference for Irish Studies. She co-founded the Hyde Park Community Players, directing productions such as Much Ado About Nothing and An Ideal Husband.
