Susan C Sonne

Dr. Susan C Sonne is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She holds roles as Chair of one of MUSC’s Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and Associate Director of the Regulatory Knowledge and Support Core of MUSC’s South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research Institute.

Education:

• Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the Medical College of Virginia
• Doctorate in Pharmacy (PharmD) from MUSC

Research interests focus on pharmacotherapy for addiction and co-occurring disorders, with emphasis on opioid dependence, stimulant dependence, and cigarette smoking cessation. She has led numerous federally funded clinical trials, including investigations into methamphetamine use disorder treatments through drug combinations like extended-release naltrexone and bupropion.

Advising and Grants: Dr. Sonne has served as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded studies, advancing clinical trial methodologies in substance use disorders. Her regulatory expertise supports translational research infrastructure at MUSC.

Labs/Teams: She contributes to the Regulatory Knowledge and Support Core, facilitating ethical research compliance and translational initiatives.
