Tracy Smith

Dr. Tracy Smith is an Associate Professor in the Addiction Sciences Division of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She serves as Co-Leader of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. Dr. Smith collaborates with Dr. Matthew Carpenter as co-leader of Team IMPACT, a multi-PI laboratory focused on improving tobacco cessation methods.

Dr. Smith’s research centers on tobacco regulatory science to inform FDA policies. Key areas include nicotine reduction in cigarettes, menthol regulation, and evaluating e-cigarettes as harm reduction tools. Her work spans human clinical trials and policy analysis, with a focus on disrupting tobacco addiction cycles through innovative behavioral interventions and regulatory strategies.

Scientific awards include the 2020 Jarvik-Russell Early Career Award from the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco. She mentors trainees from high school to postdoctoral levels, with alumni progressing to Ph.D. programs and faculty positions. Current studies like ESCAPE (e-cigarette flavoring impact), MINT (menthol regulation), and ADAPT (adaptive cessation treatments) highlight her leadership in pragmatic clinical trial design.
