Sun Nyunt Wai is Professor of Medical Microbial Pathogenesis at Umeå University's Department of Molecular Biology and affiliated with Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS). His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenicity, particularly bacterial membrane vesicles and their role in host-pathogen interactions. His lab investigates how secreted bacterial factors modulate host cell signaling and contribute to infectious diseases.
Research interests include characterization of virulence mechanisms in pathogenic bacteria, the function of bacterial membrane vesicles in toxin delivery, immune modulation, and cancer-related signaling pathways. The lab employs molecular biology techniques to study Vibrio cholerae and other pathogens.
Recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on bacterial toxin mechanisms, host-pathogen interactions in model organisms, cancer microbiome associations, and therapeutic applications of bacterial proteins. Collaborative works span immunology, cancer biology, and microbiome research.
As a core member of Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR), he participates in international recruitment of group leaders and maintains research collaborations with multiple institutions.
