Jeffrey Withey is a Professor and Interim Department Chair in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology at Wayne State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan (2000) and a B.A. in Biology from Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on bacterial pathogenesis, particularly Vibrio cholerae and its interactions with hosts and environmental reservoirs.
- Ph.D., Cellular and Molecular Biology, University of Michigan
- B.A., Biology, Johns Hopkins University
The Withey Lab investigates Vibrio cholerae virulence regulation, host-pathogen interactions using zebrafish models, and environmental transmission dynamics. Current work explores ToxT-mediated gene expression, microbiome competition during infection, and immune responses to pathogens.
His publications emphasize zebrafish as a model for enteric pathogens, virulence gene regulation, and microbiome modulation. Trends include Vibrio cholerae pathophysiology, probiotic interventions, and environmental adaptation mechanisms.
- Fulbright Scholar (2014-2015, 2023-2024)
- Fulbright Scholar Alumni Ambassador (2020-2022)
Dr. Withey mentors graduate students and has secured grants like the NIH award for cholera evolution research. His lab employs zebrafish models to study cholera transmission and host responses. He serves on editorial boards for PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases and Frontiers in Microbiology.
