Sumithra Velupillai is a Lecturer in Applied Health Informatics at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London, UK. She is also affiliated with the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Her research focuses on clinical natural language processing (NLP), semantic and contextual analysis, and the development of NLP tools for clinical texts and social media data.
- Education: Postdoctoral experience in the USA and doctoral studies at Stockholm University.
Her work includes creating annotated resources for uncertainty detection and temporal expression analysis in Swedish and English clinical texts and social media platforms like Reddit. She received an International Career Grant from the Swedish Research Council and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions prior to her current role.
Sumithra’s research has been highlighted in media outlets, including a study published in 2021 that analyzed spikes in Reddit’s "SuicideWatch" forum during early Monday mornings.
