Dr Daniel Michelson is a Clinical Professor in Youth Mental Health at King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), affiliated with the Academic Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust as an Honorary Consultant Clinical Psychologist. His research focuses on preventing and treating mental health issues in underserved youth (up to age 25), with an emphasis on scalable interventions in schools, communities, and low-resource settings. He leads global projects in India, Malawi, Uganda, and the UK, addressing anxiety, depression, and conduct problems through co-designed psychosocial interventions.
Educational Background: Studied Natural Sciences with Psychology at the University of Cambridge, followed by Clinical Psychology training and post-qualification research at King’s College London. Academic roles included positions at Oxford, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), and University of Sussex before returning to King’s in 2022.
Research Interests: Mental health prevention, early intervention, recovery-oriented approaches, global mental health, task-sharing models, and evidence synthesis. Key projects include the METROPOLIS trial (Wellcome Trust-funded), HOPEFUL (NIHR), and Baatcheet (Grand Challenges Canada).
Grants & Funding: Over £7 million in grants from MRC, NIHR, Wellcome Trust, and Grand Challenges Canada. Recent awards include ACAMH Awards 2023 for exceptional work in child and adolescent mental health.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with Sangath (India), South London & Maudsley NHS Trust, and global partners on interventions like web-based storytelling programs for youth mental health.
