Professor Sue Walker is a Professor of Typography at the University of Reading, affiliated with the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication. She co-directs the Centre for Book Cultures and Publishing and oversees the Lettering, Printing and Graphic Design Collections. Her work bridges academic research and practical design, focusing on information design, book history, and children’s literature.
Her research interests include the application of Isotype principles to science communication for children, health communication strategies, and the history of typography. Notable projects include the AHRC-funded study on Marie Neurath’s science books and collaborations on antimicrobial resistance awareness in Rwanda. She has held leadership roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Chair of the Information Design Association.
Publications span monographs, edited volumes, and journal articles on topics like graphic design pedagogy, typography’s role in children’s reading, and interdisciplinary health communication. Awards include Fellowship of the Design Research Society and membership in the Double Crown Club. Current projects include a monograph on Marie Neurath’s contributions to children’s book design (2025) and collaborative health communication initiatives.
