Stuart Wright

Stuart Wright is a Research Fellow in Health Economics at the University of Manchester's Division of Population Health, Health Services Research & Primary Care. He holds a PhD in Health Economics from the University of Manchester, an MSc in Health Economics from the University of East Anglia, and a BSc (Hons) in Economics from the University of Kent. He is an Honorary Fellow at the Office for Open Research at the University of Manchester and serves on the UK National Screening Committee Adult Reference Group.

His primary research focuses on incorporating implementation barriers, uptake issues, and service delivery challenges into economic evaluations of healthcare interventions. He specializes in cancer screening, precision medicine, and genomics, with particular expertise in developing economic models that account for resource constraints and imperfect implementation. In 2023, he received a prestigious Wellcome Trust Early Career Award for his project 'Providing Economic Evidence to Inform and Improve the Implementation of Cancer Screening Programmes,' which builds on his PhD work exploring capacity constraints in precision medicine economic evaluations.

Wright's research methodology prominently features discrete choice experiments to elicit preferences from various stakeholders, including the public, cancer survivors, and patients. His work spans multiple healthcare domains including newborn bloodspot screening, dietary advice for cancer survivors, and biologic calculators for psoriasis treatment. He has developed the MANC-RISK-SCREEN model, an open-source simulation tool for evaluating risk-based breast cancer screening strategies in the UK, which has been adopted by other researchers and influenced national screening discussions.

His publication record demonstrates consistent output in high-impact health economics and medical journals, with recent work focusing on pharmacogenetics implementation, risk-stratified cancer screening, and methodological improvements in health economic modeling. His research directly contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being through improved healthcare decision-making.
