Stuart J. Murray is a Professor of Rhetoric and Ethics in the Department of English Language and Literature at Carleton University, cross-appointed to Health Sciences and the Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture. He holds a B.A. from the University of Toronto, M.A. from the University of London, M.Phil. from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, and Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. His research focuses on biopolitical logics, ethical discourses, and the intersections of media, health, and governance. Murray has authored books including The Living from the Dead: Disaffirming Biopolitics (2022) and edited volumes on sexuality and bioethics.
His work examines how biopolitical frameworks justify social exclusions through studies of HIV policy, carceral systems, and digital media discourses. Key grants include SSHRC Insight Development (2012–2020) and CIHR funding for HIV treatment-as-prevention research. Murray has supervised over 15 graduate students in communication studies, health sciences, and cultural theory.
Notable awards include the Canada Research Chair (2012–2021), Royal Society of Canada fellowship (2014–2021), and multiple teaching awards. His research has been supported by SSHRC, CIHR, and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. Murray’s affiliations include the Canadian Health Adaptations Innovations Mobilization Centre and leadership roles in academic societies like the Modern Language Association.
