Stuart Campbell is a Professor of Near Eastern Archaeology at The University of Manchester, with a career spanning over four decades. He holds a MA and PhD from the University of Edinburgh (1984, 1992), followed by a post-doctoral fellowship there before joining Manchester in 1995.
His fieldwork focuses on the Near East, including long-term projects at Domuztepe (Turkey), Tell Khaiber (Iraq), and Charax Spasinou (Iraq). He specializes in obsidian sourcing, early complex societies, and innovative archaeological technologies like portable XRF. Key interests include Neolithic to Bronze Age social complexity, ceramic analysis, and cultural heritage protection in conflict zones.
Research highlights include directing the Domuztepe project (1995–2016), co-directing the Ur Region Archaeology Project (2013–present), and analyzing obsidian networks across the prehistoric Near East.
