Ian Kuijt is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame and a Faculty Fellow at the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies. His research examines the social geography of village life in prehistoric/historic communities and the material expression of identity. He holds degrees from the University of Lethbridge (B.A., 1984), Simon Fraser University (M.A., 1988), and Harvard University (A.M., 1991; Ph.D., 1995).
Kuijt's work focuses on archaeology, social inequality, Irish historical archaeology, and visual histories. He investigates mortuary practices, community organization, Neolithic settlements, and cultural heritage preservation through interdisciplinary approaches combining ethnography, social theory, and material analysis.
His recent publications emphasize Irish coastal heritage, Neolithic demography, conflict archaeology, and mortuary symbolism. Articles frequently explore methodological innovations in isotope analysis, spatial archaeology, and community-based research, reflecting sustained engagement with theoretical and applied anthropology.
Kuijt has secured funding from the National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Wenner Gren Foundation, Mellon Foundation, and others. He currently advises PhD students on archaeological theory, Near Eastern Neolithic studies, Irish historic archaeology, and material culture analysis.
