Susan E. Allen is Associate Professor and Department Head of Anthropology at the University of Cincinnati's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Archaeology from Boston University and an M.A. in Aegean Prehistory from Bryn Mawr College. As NAGPRA Director, she oversees cultural heritage compliance. Her research investigates Mediterranean agriculture emergence and wetland ecologies through archaeological fieldwork in Greece, Albania, and Croatia.
Research domains include:
- Neolithic transitions in Southeast Europe
- Political ecology of Mycenaean agriculture
- Archaeobotanical analysis of prehistoric sites
- Long-term human-environment interactions
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on paleoethnobotany methods since 2019, with recent expansion into North American anthropogenic fire regimes. Fieldwork includes co-direction of the Southern Albania Neolithic Archaeological Project (SANAP) and Cetina Valley Survey (CeVaS).
