Stuart Black is an Associate Professor in Isotope Geochemistry at the University of Reading, affiliated with the Department of Geography and Environmental Science within the School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Science. He serves as the School Director of Teaching and Learning and is a Fellow of the Geological Society. He is associated with the Walker Institute for Climate Systems Research and the Soil Research Centre, and has been a member of the NERC Peer Review College (2017–2021).
Stuart Black holds a BSc (Hons) in Geology and Mineralogy from the University of Aberdeen and a PhD in Isotope Geochemistry from Lancaster University, where he studied U-Series isotopes in volcanic rocks from the Kenya Rift Valley.
His research focuses on isotope geochemistry and its applications to climate and environmental change, geochronology, isotope ecology, forensic science, and archaeological materials. Key areas include paleoclimate reconstruction using speleothems, provenance studies of honey and beeswax, and innovative isotopic techniques for archaeological analysis. His work integrates fieldwork in the Peruvian Andes, Mediterranean, Middle East, and Northern Europe with laboratory-based isotopic analysis.
The 15 most recent publications reflect a strong trend in applying stable and radiogenic isotopes to reconstruct past environments, climate dynamics, and human-environment interactions. Stuart Black is an active postgraduate supervisor, currently leading and co-supervising multiple PhD projects funded by NERC, British Honey Company, BGS, and international governments. He has successfully supervised 28 PhD students on topics related to isotope geochemistry, climate reconstruction, and provenance studies. He has secured research funding from NERC, FoS, SAGES, and Malaysian Government sources, supporting a diverse portfolio of projects across paleoenvironmental, archaeological, and ecological domains.
His research is conducted within the broader context of the Walker Institute and Soil Research Centre, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration on climate systems and environmental change. He leads projects involving speleothem analysis, isotopic tracing in ecosystems, and forensic applications of geochemistry.
