Stuart Altman is the Sol C. Chaikin Professor of National Health Policy at The Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University. With five decades of experience in federal and state health policy, he has advised five presidential administrations and chaired multiple national health commissions. His research focuses on health care planning, health economics, and health insurance policy. Dr. Altman holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from UCLA and a B.B.A. from CUNY City College.
His leadership roles include service as Deputy Assistant Secretary at HEW (1971-1976), Chairman of ProPac (1984-1996), and appointee to the National Bipartisan Commission on Medicare (1997). He was re-appointed by Governor Baker to chair the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission in 2016.
