Hannah Weiss Muller is an Associate Professor of History at Brandeis University, specializing in British Empire history with a focus on the long eighteenth century. Her work examines the intersections of law, monarchy, identity, and subjecthood. She teaches courses on early modern and modern Britain, the British Empire, Modern Europe, Global Wars, Revolutions, and Britain-South Asia relations.
Education: A.B. from Harvard University (2000), Ph.D. from Princeton University (2010). Affiliations include the Department of History at Brandeis, and affiliated faculty roles in South Asian Studies and International/Global Studies programs. Previously taught at Denison University (2013-2015) and Harvard University (2011-2013).
Research interests center on colonial legal frameworks, the evolution of subjecthood, and transimperial dynamics. Recent work explores comparative histories of 1790s aliens acts and anxieties in garrison societies. Awards include the NEH Summer Stipend (2020) and the Michael J. Walzer Teaching Award (2020).
Labs/Teams: Engaged in cross-disciplinary collaborations through Brandeis’ International and Global Studies program. Current research focuses on comparative legal histories of migration control in the British Empire.
