Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh is the Earle W. Kazis and Benjamin Schore Professor of Real Estate and Professor of Finance at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business, joining in July 2018 after 15 years at New York University’s Stern School of Business. He holds a PhD in Economics (2003), MSc in Financial Mathematics (2001), and MA in Economics (2001) from Stanford University, and a BA in Economics (1998) from the University of Ghent, Belgium.
His research spans real estate, asset pricing, and macroeconomics, focusing on:
- Impact of remote work on real estate valuations
- Affordable housing policies
- Mortgage market design
- Foreign buyers’ influence on housing markets
- Property price dynamics
- Government debt and fiscal policy
He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and received media attention from outlets like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and The Economist. His awards include:
- Bernácer Prize (2016)
- TIAA Paul Samuelson Award (2020)
- Columbia Business School Practice Prize (2024)
Van Nieuwerburgh has held leadership roles in major academic associations:
