Kent Smetters is the Boettner Chair Professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He is a professor in Business Economics and Public Policy, as well as Insurance and Risk Management, with secondary appointments in Applied Mathematics and Computational Science at Penn. His research spans applied theory, finance, public economics, insurance, health care, risk measurement, and personal finance.
- Education: PhD in Economics from Harvard University
His academic work addresses economic theory applied to real-world policy, including risk ranking measures, life insurance dynamics, and fiscal policy. He has received multiple honors, including the 2016 TIAA Paul A. Samuelson Award for his research on annuitization and grants from the National Bureau of Economic Research (RRC Grants, 2003-2007) and Smith-Richardson Foundation (2004-2005).
At Wharton, he teaches courses like Microeconomics for Managers, Business Analytics, and Special Topics. He also hosts “Your Money,” a weekly personal finance radio show on SiriusXM, and contributes monthly to the Wall Street Journal. His policy experience includes roles at the Congressional Budget Office (1995-1998) and Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Treasury (2001-2002).
