Stewart Shuman, MD, PhD, is a Professor at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and holds the Simon H. Rifkind Chair. His research focuses on the mechanisms and structures of enzymes involved in nucleic acid transactions, spanning from viruses to mammalian cells, with a goal to identify therapeutic targets for human diseases.
- Education: BA in Biology (1976, Wesleyan University), PhD in Molecular Biology (1983, Albert Einstein College of Medicine), MD (1981, Albert Einstein College of Medicine).
Dr. Shuman's research integrates virology, biochemistry, structural biology, and genetics to study:
- RNA ligases and RNA repair
- DNA damage recognition and repair by DNA ligases
- The RNA polymerase II CTD code and its role in gene expression
- Structure-function of nucleic acid metabolic enzymes
His work has resulted in significant publications in fields like Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Structural Biology, with a focus on enzymatic mechanisms and RNA/DNA repair processes. Awards include the NIH MERIT Award, American Cancer Society Research Professorship, and membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
- Scientific Awards
- NIH MERIT Award (2007)
- American Cancer Society Research Professor (2005–present)
- Member, American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2015)
- Pew Scholar (1990–94)
Dr. Shuman's lab at MSKCC includes researchers like Jill Babor, Shreya Ghosh, and Ana M. Sanchez. He is affiliated with the Molecular Biology Program, Department of Medicine, and the Tri-Institutional PhD Program in Chemical Biology.
