Steven Walton is an Associate Professor of History in the Industrial Heritage and Archaeology (IHA) program at Michigan Technological University. He specializes as a historian of technology and material culture, focusing on industrial heritage, military-industrial production, and historical preservation. His research includes studies on 19th-century iron ore washing industries, World War I trophies, and cannon foundries in the Early American Republic. He co-edited works on industrial heritage sites like the Pullman National Historical Landmark and serves as editor of the journal IA and Secretary of the Society for Industrial Archaeology (SIA).
Walton’s academic contributions span 8 edited collections and earned him the 2019 SIA Vogel Prize. His pedagogical work emphasizes experiential learning and community engagement in industrial heritage education. He actively participates in international conferences, such as the TICCIH event in Montréal, where he contributed to sessions on industrial heritage's future and its socio-economic impacts.
Key collaborations include projects with the National Park Service (NPS) and interdisciplinary work across archaeology, history, and urban planning. His research bridges material culture with broader themes of sustainability, deindustrialization, and heritage conservation.
