Steven High is a Professor of History at Concordia University and co-founder of the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling (COHDS). He is a leading scholar in oral history, deindustrialization, and public heritage, with a strong focus on working-class communities and urban transformation.

- Oral History and Memory Studies
- Industrial and Post-Industrial Heritage
- Working-Class Identity and Belonging
- Gentrification and Urban Displacement
- Community-Based and Public History
- Deindustrialization in North America and globally
His recent publications and public lectures explore the social and political dimensions of industrial heritage, particularly in Montreal’s Southwest and the Lachine Canal area. He critically examines how heritage preservation can both empower and displace communities, often serving as a driver of gentrification. His work integrates academic scholarship with community engagement, student collaboration, and public storytelling through audio walks and exhibitions.
Notable projects include:
- Canal: Walking the Post-Industrial Lachine Canal (2013)
- La Pointe: The Other Side of the Tracks (2015)
- Fleur dans le fleuve (2012)
- Co-editing a special issue of Labor on (De-)Industrial Heritage
He actively mentors students through courses like Working Class Public History and participates in transdisciplinary initiatives such as Concordia’s ‘Right to the City’ program. His scholarship bridges historical analysis, urban studies, and social justice, contributing to both academic and public understanding of post-industrial societies.
