Prof. Steven Sorrell is a Professor of Energy Policy at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) within the University of Sussex Business School. He holds an honorary position at Imperial College London and is a highly cited researcher in energy policy. His research focuses on energy efficiency, rebound effects, resource depletion, and climate policy. He has extensive experience with applied policy research, consulting for international organizations, UK government departments, and NGOs.
Education: PhD (University of Exeter, 2012), MSc in Science and Technology Policy (SPRU, 1989-1990), BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (City University, 1982-1985).
Research interests include energy policy design, rebound effects in digital innovation, teleworking impacts on energy use and travel, and exergy economics. He has led major grants such as the UK Centre for Research on Energy Demand and the EPSRC-funded Design Principles for a Sustainable Digital Economy.
His recent articles analyze telework effects on commutes and emissions, energy efficiency rebound effects, and digitalization impacts. Awards include inclusion in Clarivate Analytics' and ScholarGPS' Highly Cited Researchers lists.
Teaching includes MSc programs in Energy and Climate Policy, and he currently supervises two PhD students. He has taught at multiple UK institutions and delivered professional courses on energy economics to civil servants.
