Noam Bergman is a Research Fellow at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) within the University of Sussex Business School, where he is also a member of the Sussex Energy Group (SEG). He previously worked at the Centre on Innovation and Energy Demand (CIED) and is currently active in research and teaching related to sustainability transitions.
His research focuses on:
- Transitions to sustainable development and low carbon economies
- Human dimensions in low carbon transitions
- Low carbon technologies and their use, such as microgeneration
- Social innovation for sustainability
- Social movements, including fossil fuel divestment and climate activism
- Theoretical frameworks including transitions theory, strategic niche management, and diffusion of innovation
Bergman's recent publications (2019-2023) demonstrate consistent engagement with energy policy, digitalization impacts on energy demand, sustainable mobility transitions, and the social dimensions of technological change. His work often examines how systemic change can be achieved to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through both technological innovation and social transformation.
He is actively involved in teaching as a Teaching Fellow on SPRU's Energy Policy MSc (online) program, where he tutors on modules including Introduction to Energy Policy and Policy Analysis. He has supervised MSc dissertations at both the University of Sussex (2015-2017) and Oxford (2010-2012) and holds an Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
Bergman's academic background spans both natural and social sciences, with a BSc in Physics and MSc in Environmental Sciences from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and a PhD in environmental sciences from the University of East Anglia. His career has included work on the EU project MATISSE (2005-2007), research at Oxford's Environmental Change Institute (2008-2013), and his current position at Sussex since 2015.
