Steven Poelhekke is a Professor of International Environmental Economics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He is affiliated with the Tinbergen Institute, CEPR, CESifo, and OxCarre. Previously, he served as Professor of Economics and Head of Department at the University of Auckland, and worked at the Dutch central bank (DNB). He holds a PhD from the European University Institute, Florence (Italy). His research focuses on international trade, investment, development economics, and environmental policy, with notable studies on resource wealth impacts, FDI effects, and climate policy.
Key research areas include natural resource management, financial sector dynamics, and sustainable development. He has published in top journals like Journal of the European Economic Association and Journal of Development Economics. His work addresses global challenges such as the clean energy transition, carbon taxation, and infrastructure bottlenecks in developing economies.
