Steven Hopp is an Adjunct Professor at Emory & Henry College, teaching part-time in the Environmental Studies program. He focuses on courses like Sustainable Agriculture in Appalachia and Wildlife Monitoring and Management during the fall semester. His research spans decades, encompassing animal behavior, communication, and the study of vireos (particularly White-eyed and Bell’s Vireos), alongside work on local food systems and economies. He holds a B.A. from Simpson College (Psychology, Biology minors in Chemistry) and a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Indiana University, with minors in Zoology and Physiological Psychology.
Previously, Hopp served as Assistant and Associate Professor of Psychology at Emory & Henry (1984–2004), Chair of the Psychology Department, and later as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Arizona’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (1994–2004). He also acted as a Research Associate at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, studying songbirds’ roles in pollination. His interdisciplinary work includes co-authoring Animal, Vegetable, Miracle (2007), a bestseller exploring local food systems, alongside his wife Barbara Kingsolver. He founded the Meadowview Farmers’ Guild and directs the Harvest Table Restaurant, advocating for local economies through initiatives like Appalachian Sustainable Development.
Hopp’s research highlights include vireo vocal communication, insular species interactions, and sustainable agriculture advocacy. He has conducted field studies across diverse ecosystems, from Virginia to the Antilles, and Arizona’s Sonoran Desert. His contributions bridge ecological research, conservation, and community-driven sustainability efforts.
