Steven Hackett served as a Professor in the Department of Economics at Cal Poly Humboldt from 1994 until his retirement in 2018. His academic work centered on the economics of clean energy, environmental policy, and natural resources, with specific expertise in common-pool resource dilemmas, fisheries economics, and regional economic development. Dr. Hackett earned his BS in Agricultural Business and Economics from Montana State University (1983) and PhD in Economics from Texas A&M University (1989).
His research examined social dilemmas in common-pool resources using theoretical modeling and laboratory experiments, along with economic analyses of environmental regulation and fishery management. Recognized as Cal Poly Humboldt's Scholar of the Year in 2005, his work on California's Dungeness crab fishery received the gold award from the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals.
Dr. Hackett authored the influential textbook Environmental and Natural Resources Economics: Theory, Policy and the Sustainable Society and published extensively on fisheries management, wave energy development, and institutional solutions to resource conflicts. His research received support from the National Science Foundation, California Sea Grant, and California Seafood Council.

Beyond academia, Dr. Hackett co-founded Humboldt's Index of Economic Activity (1996) and established the Office for Economic and Community Development. He contributed to Arcata's award-winning Economic Development Strategic Plan and taught across multiple programs including Environmental Systems. His community engagement included advancing renewable energy initiatives and regional economic planning.
