Jennifer Ortega is a Lecturer in Environmental Education at Cal Poly Humboldt, affiliated with the School of Applied Health. Since 2012, she has contributed to the university’s academic community, emphasizing hands-on and place-based learning to foster environmental stewardship. Her educational philosophy integrates natural and human systems, aiming to prepare students for sustainable futures.
She holds a B.S. in Marine Fisheries from Humboldt State University (1997), an M.A. in Curriculum & Pedagogy (Science Education) from the University of Colorado, Denver (2004), and is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in Educational Sustainability at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point.
Jennifer’s research and teaching interests focus on environmental literacy, sustainable education practices, and the role of recreation in promoting healthy communities. She has extensive experience as a middle school science teacher, an education ranger at Redwood National & State Parks, and coordinator at Cal Poly Humboldt’s Natural History Museum.
She serves as an instructor for the University of California Naturalist Program and an advisor for the California Environmental Education Certification Program. Jennifer’s certifications include recognition from the North American Association of Environmental Education (NAAEE).
