Steven Gross is an Associate Professor and Program Head of the Abbott MFA in Musical Theater Collaboration Program at Temple University's School of Theater, Film and Media Arts. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Conducting from Yale University and a Bachelor of Arts/Master of Music (BAM/MM) from Northwestern University, alongside Fulbright and Rotary Scholar distinctions.
His professional career spans Broadway, Off-Broadway, the West End, and international stages as a music director, conductor, and orchestrator. Notable works include the European premieres of The Life, Urinetown, and Falsettos, as well as conducting opera companies and symphony orchestras. He is recognized for his Lortel Award nomination for the adapted musical The Pirates of Penzance and collaborations with renowned composers like Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Sam Carner.
Dr. Gross’s expertise bridges academia and performance, with a focus on musical theater collaboration, orchestration, and classical conducting. His creative work includes the musical Nijinsky, performed in Berlin, Zurich, and Monte Carlo. He maintains dual roles as an educator and practicing artist, emphasizing interdisciplinary artistic partnerships.
