Ian Axness serves as Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre and Resident Music Director at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), appointed August 15, 2023, after joining as adjunct faculty in 2022.
His educational background includes:
- B.A. in Music History/Music Theory from Oberlin College (2009)
- M.M. in Orchestral Conducting from University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (2022)
Axness pioneers an incisive, inclusive approach to American musical theatre spanning historical and contemporary works. His research bridges Western art music, Broadway traditions, and experimental performance forms including operas, pop-up productions, hybrid recitals, and cabarets. He emphasizes collaborative new work development with composers and theatermakers while exploring intersections between academic music theory and practical stage direction.

As an educator, Axness mentors students across institutions including Juilliard, Oberlin, Mannes School of Music, and NYU Abu Dhabi. His teaching integrates conducting techniques with theatrical storytelling while developing emerging artists through Living Arts Collaborative and The Performing Arts Project.
He maintains active artistic partnerships with Shaina Taub, Michael R. Jackson, and Heather Christian while contributing to Opera in the Ozarks and New Dramatists. His recent projects include conducting Orphée aux enfers and developing new musicals with Carner & Gregor.
