Karen Coe Miller is a Professor of Music and Assistant Director of Opera & Music Theater at the Bass School of Music, Oklahoma City University. She has held roles including Assistant Director at The Minnesota Opera, co-founder of Nautilus Music-Theater, and instructor at the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria.
Her career focuses on opera, musical theater, and experimental music-theater production. She co-founded Nautilus Music-Theater in 1992, which developed new works through Rough Cuts! performances and the National Residency Program. Her directing spans venues like the Minnesota Opera, Goodman Theatre, and Lyric Opera of Cleveland.
Miller emphasizes performer training, leading apprentice programs for institutions such as Des Moines Metro Opera and Sarasota Opera. She has presented workshops at over 15 universities and NATS conventions, and teaches annually at the Wesley Balk Opera/Music-Theater Institute.
Her educational background includes a B.A. from Macalester College and an M.F.A. in directing from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music.
