Steven Bittle is a Full Professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa, specializing in crimes of the powerful and corporate crime. His work examines corporate criminal liability, occupational health and safety violations, and the political economy of law through a critical criminological lens.
Education:
- PhD in Sociology from Queen's University
- MA in Criminology from Simon Fraser University
- BA in Criminology from Simon Fraser University
Research Focus:
His research centers on understanding how powerful entities, particularly corporations, commit and avoid accountability for various forms of harm. This includes examining corporate manslaughter laws, work-related suicides, and systemic corruption in Canadian contexts. His approach combines Marxist legal theory with critical criminology to analyze how legal systems both enable and constrain corporate power.
Current Research Projects:
He is currently leading SSHRC-funded projects on corporate corruption in Canada and work-related suicide, while preparing a book-length manuscript on corporate manslaughter law reform. His work extends to examining how anti-corruption mechanisms like OECD monitoring function as ritualized performances rather than substantive accountability measures.
Teaching and Supervision:
He teaches courses ranging from introductory criminology to specialized doctoral seminars on corporate crime. He currently supervises graduate students working in areas related to crimes of the powerful, corporate crime, and sociology of law, and welcomes PhD applications aligned with his research interests.
Professional Service:
- Associate Editor, Journal of White Collar and Corporate Crime
- Former Coordinator of Criminology Department's PhD program (2018-2023)
