Steve Viner is a Professor of Philosophy at Middlebury College, specializing in moral philosophy and legal ethics. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from Washington University in St. Louis, a JD from William Mitchell College of Law, an MA from Marquette University, and a BA from St. John’s University. Prior to academia, he practiced law in both private and public sectors.
His research focuses on moral issues in law, including international conflicts and humanitarian intervention. He co-edited The Morality of War: Classical and Contemporary Readings and has published on topics like state self-defense, just war theory, and Fuller’s legal cosmopolitanism. He teaches courses on ethics, human rights, global justice, and the philosophy of law.
Key presentations include discussions on just war theory at the World Congress of Philosophy of Law and Hobbesian realism at the American Philosophical Association conferences.
