Steve Davis is a Teacher of Applied Music at Washington University in St. Louis, where he focuses on jazz combo instruction. Previously, he served as a Visiting Professor of Jazz Studies at Indiana University (2000–2001) and as a faculty member at the Berlin Conservatory of Music (2000–2001) and the University of Southern Florida Tampa (2004–2008). He has also taught at the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Clinics (1982–2010) and Port Townsend (2007).
His professional career spans over 165 recordings, including 10 as a leader, and collaborations with renowned artists like David Liebman, Bill Evans, and Benny Golson. Davis is a prolific educator, having authored six drum books, including a 2008 publication from Schott-Music Publishing, and developed 12 jazz drum play-a-longs. He also runs an active recording studio and maintains an international touring schedule.
As a recording engineer, Davis has engineered over 300 jazz recordings, further distinguishing himself in music production. His teaching philosophy integrates performance, pedagogy, and technical mastery, reflected in his global educational clinics and studio work.
