Stephen W. Stookey was a prominent academic and administrator at Coe College for 36 years. Born in Marion, Iowa, he graduated from Coe College with a B.A. (1884) and M.A. (1887), later receiving an honorary LL.D. (1906). He served as Professor of Biology, German, and Latin, and specialized in geology. His administrative roles included Dean of Coe College (1902–1908, 1914–1933), Interim President (1904–1905), and Professor Emeritus of Geology (post-1933).
His research contributions include leading geological expeditions, such as the Bahama Islands marine life study (1893) and Wyoming fossil expeditions (1899). He authored reports on Iowa's geology for the Iowa Geological Survey (published in 1906). He played a key role in fundraising, securing endowments and buildings like Carnegie Science Hall and Voorhees Hall. He mentored students and faculty, including Bert Heald Bailey and George W. Bryant, shaping Coe's academic landscape.
Stookey's legacy includes strengthening Coe's financial and academic foundations through campaigns, curriculum development, and collaborative efforts with trustees and faculty. His honorary degree and dedicated service reflect his profound impact on the institution.
