Stephen Tierney is Professor of Constitutional Theory at Edinburgh Law School and Director of the Edinburgh Centre for Constitutional Law. He previously served as Deputy Head of the Law School (2017–2020) and holds an Honorary King’s Counsel (KC) 2024 and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) 2020. His work spans the UK and comparative constitutional law, focusing on federalism, direct democracy, and constitutional theory.
His research explores the constitutional implications of Brexit, plurinational federalism, and the role of referendums in democratic processes. He has led projects funded by the British Academy, ESRC, and the Australian Research Council, including grants totaling £5,000,000 for the Centre on Constitutional Change.
