Stephen S. Rich

Dr. Stephen S. Rich is a Professor in the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on the genetic epidemiology of complex human diseases, particularly atherosclerosis, ischemic stroke, and type 1 diabetes. He leads studies using large-scale genomic approaches, including genome-wide association scans and family-based linkage analyses, to identify disease susceptibility genes and pathways.

Education: PhD in Genetics from Purdue University.

Research interests include the genetic basis of diabetic complications, stroke risk factors, and cardiovascular biology. Key projects involve the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) and the Siblings With Ischemic Stroke Study (SWISS), leveraging longitudinal clinical and imaging data to uncover genetic contributors to disease progression. His work aims to develop predictive models and therapeutic targets through functional studies of identified gene variants.
