His work bridges traditional musicological research with innovative digital approaches, as evidenced by his Art Song Augmented project and Resounding Verse podcast.
His recent publications reveal a sustained scholarly focus on women composers of art songs, with particular attention to Fanny Hensel and Clara Schumann. Rodgers employs both historical and analytical methodologies to explore compositional techniques, cultural contexts, and interpretive possibilities in these works. His research often intersects with digital humanities approaches, making specialized scholarship accessible to broader audiences through online platforms.
Rodgers received the Outstanding Multi-Author Collection Award from the Society for Music Theory in 2024 for his edited volume The Songs of Fanny Hensel (Oxford University Press, 2021). This recognition underscores the significance of his contributions to the field of music theory and women's music history.
As an educator, Rodgers has advised numerous master's theses and doctoral dissertations on diverse topics including Fanny Hensel's musical language, undergraduate music theory instructional design, and timbre/embodiment across music, dance, and film. His Cykler Chair position supports projects that connect university and community through music scholarship and performance.
Rodgers co-founded the Women's Song Forum, an online platform dedicated to women's voices in song, and maintains Art Song Augmented, a digital resource for underrepresented composers. He also hosts the Resounding Verse podcast, which explores the relationship between poetry and song for both academic and general audiences.
