Catrina Kim is an Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst), joining in 2023 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), where she held the same position since 2020. She completed her Ph.D. at the Eastman School of Music in 2020. Her research focuses on Romantic-era music, particularly fragmentary sonata forms and slow introductions in Fanny Hensel’s chamber music, alongside pedagogical approaches addressing diversity, labor, and feminist thought.
Her work bridges music analysis and critical theory, with publications in Music Theory Spectrum, Modeling Musical Analysis, and Expanding the Canon: Black Composers in the Music Theory Classroom. She serves on the editorial board of Music Theory Online and co-chaired UNCG’s Irna Priore Music and Culture Lecture Series.
Catrina’s teaching spans institutions like Oberlin Conservatory and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Her recent articles (2023) emphasize ethical pedagogy, neoliberal critiques in music education, and diversifying sonata studies beyond canonical composers. She actively contributes to inclusive academic practices through service and scholarship.
