Stephen Manley is a Senior Lecturer at the Bath School of Art, Film and Media, Bath Spa University. His work bridges film studies, music composition, and cultural analysis, with a focus on British pop/rock cinema and silent film accompaniment.
- Education: BA(Hons) in Humanities from the University of the West of England (UWE), MA in Visual Culture from Bath Spa University College (BSUC)
Research interests include the interplay between British musical genres and cinema from the 1960s to the present, spanning kitchen-sink realism, psychedelia, rockumentaries, and postmodern nostalgia. His creative outputs, such as the Passion of Joan of Arc soundtrack project with Adrian Utley and Will Gregory, highlight his interdisciplinary approach.
Stephen has contributed to projects like the documentary on Anton Bantock and music for A Miner's Tale, blending practical and theoretical engagement with media technologies and cultural heritage. He also explores the modernist legacy in works like Pink Floyd's The Wall.
His teaching covers courses like Introduction to Film, European Cinema, and Media Technologies and Change, informed by his Certificate in Advanced Professional Studies in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Professional memberships include the Performing Rights Society and Mechanical Copyright Protection Society.
