Stephen Laifer is an Instructor of Orchestral Repertory (Horn) at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. He has held significant roles in orchestras globally, including 4th Horn of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra since 2012. His career spans international engagements with ensembles such as the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra (1990–2002), Barcelona’s orchestra, and multiple U.S. orchestras. Laifer’s teaching extends beyond Eastman to private studios and masterclasses at institutions like Louisiana State University and UNC Greensboro. He is also an active freelance musician, performing with orchestras like the Florida Orchestra and Charlotte Symphony, while maintaining a parallel career in writing and editing for organizations including the American Federation of Musicians and the United Nations.
Education: Studied horn at Ithaca College under John Covert, followed by further development with David Krehbiel during his tenure in the U.S. Air Force Band. His career trajectory includes military service, global orchestral tours, and a transition from graphic design to music at age 16.
Research/Teaching Focus: Specializes in orchestral repertory performance, brass pedagogy, and practical music education. His expertise bridges professional orchestral performance with academic mentorship.
Additional Activities: An avid outdoorsman (hiking, mountain biking, kayaking) and devoted dog owner, Laifer balances artistic, academic, and recreational pursuits.
