Dr. Stephen L. Young is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures at Appalachian State University. His research focuses on ancient Judaism, biblical literature, and early Christian studies, with particular interests in mythological narratives, religious discourse analysis, and gender studies. He holds a Ph.D. from Brown University (2016), Th.M. and M.A.R. from Westminster Theological Seminary, and a B.A. from UNC Chapel Hill.
His work critiques protective scholarly practices in biblical studies and explores how ancient texts construct identity and power. He has published extensively on Pauline theology, early Christian practices, and the intersection of religion with politics and gender. Recent works include Paul Among the Mythmakers (2025) and articles in New Testament Studies and Journal of Early Christian History.
Dr. Young has received awards such as the Paul J. Achtemeier Award (2020) and the Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship (2014–16). He teaches courses on ancient myth, biblical interpretation, and religion in American society. His research projects include analyzing Paul’s use of Greco-Roman mythmaking strategies and the role of literacy debates in inerrantist scholarship.
