Professor Stephen J. Russell is a leading academic and industry expert in textile materials and technology at the University of Leeds. He holds the position of Professor of Textile Materials & Technology (2006–present) and serves as Director of multiple institutes: the Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour (LITAC), the Clothworkers' Centre for Textile Materials Innovation for Healthcare (CCTMIH), and the Future Fashion Factory (FFF). He is also the Founder and Group Technical Director of the Nonwovens Innovation and Research Institute (NIRI) Ltd, a University of Leeds spin-out company.
- Expertise: Nonwovens engineering, sustainable fashion/textile manufacturing, healthcare textile design, and textile recycling technologies.
- Affiliations: Honorary Liveryman of the Clothworkers Company, Freeman of the City of London, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).
His research focuses on advancing textile materials, process-structure-property relationships, and sustainable manufacturing, supported by £30M in funding from EPSRC, AHRC, Innovate UK, and industry partners. He leads projects on biomaterials, technical textiles for healthcare, and circular economy solutions.
As Director of NIRI Ltd, he bridges academic research with industry applications, offering global consultancy and product development for nonwovens. Current initiatives include the Future Fashion Factory, driving innovation in sustainable fashion systems.
