Stephen Groening is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Washington. His research focuses on critical theory, media infrastructure, and the intersection of television with postwar cultural philosophy. He teaches courses on digital social media, television theory/history, cinema aesthetics, and media technologies.
His notable work includes Cinema Beyond Territory: Inflight Entertainment and Atmospheres of Globalization, which examines aviation and cinema as instruments of globalization. Current research explores television’s influence on postwar cultural theory and philosophy. Groening’s recent publications address memes, meteorology in media studies, and the aesthetics of banality in internet culture.
He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Studies in Discourse and Society from the University of Minnesota (2008). His prior research includes studies on cinematic exhibition, workplace training films, and mobile media technologies across disciplines of film, media, and technology history.
