Karla Oeler is an Associate Professor in the Film and Media Studies Program at Stanford University. Her research and teaching focus on film history, theory, and criticism, with particular attention to Sergei Eisenstein's work, cinematic depictions of violence and cognition, and intersections between film aesthetics, literature, and philosophy.
Her notable publications include the book A Grammar of Murder: Violent Scenes and Film Form (University of Chicago Press, 2009), and her work has appeared in journals such as Cinema Journal, The Journal of Visual Culture, and Slavic Review. Current projects include her book-in-progress titled The Surface of Things: Cinema and Interiority.
